Howard County Public Schools has for many years had one of the finest music programs in the country. As Director of Bands at Pointers Run Elementary School, I hope to continue this tradition of excellent instruction. I am excited about being at Pointers Run again this year.
From an educational standpoint, the discipline of playing a musical instrument is recognized as a valuable experience by our administration. In addition, it helps with school studies, discipline and there is little doubt that performing with a Band provides much personal satisfaction.
For interested students, music lessons are provided as a regular part of the school program. The lessons are given twice a week during the school day on a two week, rotating schedule. Classes will begin on September 25th. However, you as the parent would be responsible for renting an instrument and purchasing instruction books (information is listed on page 2). Needless to say, it is best to use the “Rent-To-Own” plan until you are reasonably satisfied that your child has progressed enough to warrant instrument purchase. I have several Trombones, Euphoniums , Tubas and French Horns that I can lend to you free of charge.
In some cases, we get an overload of requests for one instrument. If this happens, I will contact you and suggest a similar instrument where performance opportunities may be greater and which will maintain a balance in the Band. If I do not contact you by September 15th, please rent your child’s first choice.
The following Instrumental Music Information on this website should answer most questions concerning the instrumental program. Please read the information sheets and fill the Google Doc form as soon as possible, but no later than September14th. Please save this information for future reference.
If there are any questions, please do not hesitate to contact me at firstname.lastname@example.org. I look forward to working with your child. I hope to see you at our first concert in December.
